Watch Care: How to keep your timepiece beautiful for decades

Tim Braun·6 min read3.233 views

A high-quality watch is an investment. With the right care, it will last a lifetime – and always look great.

Why maintenance is so important

A mechanical watch consists of hundreds of small parts that work together perfectly. Neglect can lead to expensive damage.

The 5 basic rules of watch care

1. Get it serviced regularly

Automatic watches should undergo a general overhaul every 3-5 years. Cost: €300–€800 depending on the model. It sounds like a lot, but it extends the service life enormously.

2. Clean it properly

Never use aggressive cleaning agents! For steel watches, warm water and a soft toothbrush are sufficient (only if waterproof). Never touch the dial directly.

3. Store it correctly

  • Watch winder for automatic watches – keeps the movement running
  • Protect from magnetic fields – smartphones, speakers, induction fields
  • Protect from direct sunlight – the dial can fade

4. Take care of the strap

  • Metal bracelet: clean regularly, remove dirt from the links
  • Leather strap: treat with leather care products, keep dry
  • Rubber: clean with a damp cloth

5. Check water resistance

Have it checked by a watchmaker annually or after heavy use (diving, swimming). Seals age!

The watch winder – useful or a gimmick?

For watches that are rarely worn: absolutely useful. For everyday watches: not necessary.
